How a 19th-century boys' academy evolved into a modern powerhouse of academic prestige
In short: Founded in 1861 by a Presbyterian minister, The Pingry School has transformed from a small academy for boys into a coeducational institution serving over 1,100 students. Today, this New Jersey school balances a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum with a storied athletic legacy, maintaining a selective 12% acceptance rate across all grades.
Established in 1861 by John F. Pingry, the school was initially created to provide scholastic and moral training for boys. The institution's early years were shaped by the American Civil War, which forced a relocation from Roseville to Elizabeth, New Jersey. Despite its founder's background as a minister, the school has never maintained a formal religious affiliation, though its original motto, 'the greatest respect is owed to the boys,' reflected its early mission. Following the founder's death in 1893, the school underwent several leadership transitions before settling into a long-term period of growth and physical expansion.
The 1970s marked a pivotal era for the institution as it transitioned to coeducation and merged with the Short Hills Country Day School. This shift necessitated a change in the school's motto to 'the greatest respect is due to the students.' The physical campus also evolved significantly, moving from Elizabeth to Hillside in 1953, and eventually to its current primary location in Basking Ridge in 1983. In 2021, the school further expanded its footprint by acquiring an 82-acre campus in Pottersville, formerly operated by the Purnell School.
Today, Pingry is recognized for its academic and athletic performance, consistently ranking among the top private schools in New Jersey. The school supports over 70 athletic teams, with programs like boys' swimming and girls' soccer achieving notable state-level success. Despite its prestige, the institution has faced public scrutiny, including controversy over its participation in the Paycheck Protection Program during the COVID-19 pandemic. With 16 headmasters since its inception, the school continues to leverage its proximity to the New York metropolitan area to provide extensive resources for its diverse student body.
