In short: Born Nazeer Gayed, the man who would become Pope Shenouda III began his journey in a desert cave. His leadership transformed the Coptic Orthodox Church from a localized Egyptian institution into a global presence, even as he navigated intense political tensions and ancient religious schisms.

Shenouda III’s rise was anything but linear. Before his election as the 117th Pope of Alexandria in 1971, he lived a life of intense devotion, taking monastic vows in 1954 under the name Antonious El-Syriani. He even constructed his own desert cave for contemplation. His academic background in history and theology eventually led him to become the Bishop for Christian Education, a role that focused on the church's intellectual and pedagogical foundations.

His papacy was defined by a drive for ecumenism, seeking to heal wounds that had lasted since the Council of Chalcedon in 451. In 1973, he became the first Coptic pope to visit Rome in over 1,500 years, meeting Pope Paul VI to discuss long-standing Christological disputes. He also facilitated dialogue between the Oriental and Eastern Orthodox churches, notably hosting a meeting in 1989 that resulted in a joint statement on Christology.

However, his tenure was marked by significant friction. He faced a brief suspension in 1966 due to controversial views regarding the rights of lay members to select clergy. Politically, his relationship with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was tumultuous; Shenouda was a vocal critic of Israel's treatment of Palestinians, which led him to ban Coptic pilgrimages to the Holy Land following the 1979 peace treaty. Despite these tensions, he successfully expanded the church's reach, appointing diocesan bishops in the United States, Canada, Australia, and South America.
