How a YouTube physics channel transformed into a multi-billion dollar Indian education empire
In short: Starting as a modest YouTube channel in 2016, Alakh Pandey’s Physics Wallah evolved from teaching basic physics to becoming a massive ed-tech unicorn. By prioritizing affordability and accessibility, the company expanded into offline centers, diverse competitive exam prep, and even university partnerships, fundamentally altering the landscape of Indian student preparation.
Founded by Alakh Pandey in 2016, Physics Wallah began as a YouTube channel focused on the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) curriculum. Pandey, an educator from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, gained significant traction through his distinct teaching style, reaching over 2 million followers by 2019. In 2020, he partnered with co-founder Prateek Maheshwari to launch the Physics Wallah app, which offered courses for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and JEE at rates designed to compete with established players.
The company’s growth trajectory accelerated rapidly. By June 2022, it achieved unicorn status with a valuation exceeding $1.1 billion after raising $100 million in funding. This expansion included a move into physical education with the launch of 'Vidyapeeth' centers in Kota, Rajasthan, eventually growing to 67 centers across 34 cities by November 2023. The company has also pursued an aggressive acquisition strategy, purchasing firms like FreeCo and iNeuron, and securing a 50% stake in Xylem Learning to bolster its hybrid education model.
Despite its success, the company has faced internal and public scrutiny. In March 2023, former teachers alleged a decline in the company’s vision and criticized the quality of education at the Kota center, leading them to launch a rival channel. These departures were marked by public accusations of bribery involving the competitor Adda247, which the company dismissed as a distraction. More recently, the company has pivoted toward institutional growth, signing a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Andhra Pradesh in December 2024 to establish the University of Innovation.
The company's influence is such that its story has been dramatized in media, including a 2022 web series on Amazon miniTV and a 2026 Netflix production. As of September 2024, the company was valued at approximately $2.8 billion, and it successfully went public on Indian exchanges in November 2025 with an IPO of ₹3,480 crore.
