In short: Once the first capital of the Transvaal, Potchefstroom lost its political seat to Pretoria. Yet, instead of fading into obscurity, the city embraced a new identity. Today, it stands as a premier 'city of expertise,' a training ground for world champions and a hub for higher learning.

The history of Potchefstrom is etched into the landscape of the North West Province. Founded by Voortrekkers in December 1838, it is recognized as the oldest town established by this group north of the Vaal River. While its early years were marked by political shifts—serving as the first capital of the Transvaal until it was displaced by Pretoria in 1855—the city's significance evolved through conflict and administration. The town endured the First Boer War, including a 95-day siege of a British fort in 1880, and the hardships of the Second Boer War, during which the British implemented a scorched-earth policy.

The city's modern reputation was shaped by a pivotal moment in 1909. When Colonial Secretary Jan Smuts was asked if Potchefstroom could become the capital of the Union of South Africa, he suggested the city should instead aim to be the nation's largest educational centre. This vision took root through the development of numerous institutions, most notably the North-West University, formed in 2004 via the merger of several historically significant colleges. This academic density has earned it the moniker 'city of expertise'.

Beyond the classroom, Potchefstroom has become a global destination for elite athletics. Situated at an altitude of 1,400 metres, the city provides ideal training conditions due to its air quality and elevation. It has served as a base camp for world-class teams, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup-winning Spanish football team and the 2003 Cricket World Cup-winning Australians. From hosting the annual Aardklop Arts Festival to serving as the 'Home of Sport' for 17 major disciplines, the city continues to balance its deep historical roots with a dynamic, international presence.
