How a forgotten 1962 B-side became a global viral sensation six decades later
In short: Connie Francis recorded Pretty Little Baby in 1961, only for it to languish in obscurity for over sixty years. Then, a sudden surge in social media popularity propelled the track to millions of streams, introducing the retired singer to the digital age just months before her death in 2025.
Originally written by Don Stirling and Bill Nauman, Pretty Little Baby was recorded by Connie Francis during a series of sessions at MGM Records in August 1961. At the time, Francis was 24 years old. To avoid competition with her other releases, the track was relegated to a B-side on the 1962 UK single I'm Gonna Be Warm This Winter. Despite MGM's initial efforts to promote the song internationally by commissioning versions in languages including French, German, Italian, Spanish, Swedish, and Japanese, it failed to achieve major chart success during its initial release window.
The song's trajectory shifted dramatically in 2025, 63 years after its debut, when it became a viral phenomenon on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. By May 2025, the song had accumulated over 10 billion streams across social media and surpassed 100 million streams on Spotify, becoming Francis's most-streamed track on the platform. The resurgence was so unexpected that Francis, who was 87 and retired from the industry, initially did not understand the concept of virality, famously asking her publicist, What's viral? What's that? She eventually embraced the newfound attention, expressing gratitude that even young children were discovering her music.
The song's cultural footprint extends beyond Francis's original recordings. In 2002, the Filipino girl group SexBomb Girls released a localized version on their debut album, Unang Putok. Produced by Lito Camo, this adaptation transformed the Western pop standard into a dance-pop novelty track. Rolling Stone Philippines noted that the group distinguished their version through comedic banter, ad-libs, and the inclusion of a Tom Cruise reference as a punchline. While Francis passed away in July 2025, the song remains a testament to the unpredictable nature of digital discovery, where decades-old archives can suddenly define the modern musical landscape.
