How a businessman's legacy fuels sports education and brain tumor research
In short: Preston Robert Tisch was a titan of industry, but his name lives on through two very different worlds. From the high-stakes business of the New York Giants to cutting-edge neurosurgery at Duke, his legacy continues to shape how we manage sports and fight aggressive brain tumors.
Preston Robert Tisch was a prominent American businessman who served as the chairman of Loews Corporation. His influence extended into professional sports when, in 1991, he purchased a fifty percent stake in the New York Giants, sharing ownership with Wellington Mara. Tisch was deeply involved in the team's business operations and served on the NFL's Finance and Super Bowl Policy committees until his death from brain cancer on November 15, 2005. Prior to his commercial triumphs, he held the role of US Postal Service Postmaster General. He also co-owned the Loews Corporation alongside his brother, Laurence.
Today, the Tisch name is synonymous with specialized academic and medical excellence. Founded in 2003, NYU SPS's Preston Robert Tisch Institute for Global Sport equips students for prominent roles in management, marketing, and sports analytics. The institute currently serves about 600 undergraduate and graduate students, with an alumni community that has grown to 1,200 members. The institute's advisory board consists of influential figures from the international sports industry. These experts help develop new curricula and provide mentorship through industry engagement.
In the medical field, the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke stands as a leader in neurosurgery. Annually, the centre manages roughly 75 new paediatric and 900 new adult brain tumour cases. Specialists at Duke are working on advanced therapies, including a vaccine designed to extend the lives of those battling glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain tumor. The centre is led by internationally recognised physician scientists. These experts possess decades of experience in treating spinal cord and brain tumours.
