The forgotten prince who lived in the shadow of kings
In short: He was the third son of George V, yet history often overlooks him. Known as 'the unknown soldier' for his low profile, Prince Henry navigated royal scandals, a forbidden romance, and the heavy burden of duty while his brothers sat upon the throne.
Prince Henry, Duke of and Gloucester, lived a life defined by the tension between personal desire and royal obligation. Born in 1900 at Sandringham, he was a child of fragile health, struggling with speech impediments and the need for leg splints. Unlike his royal predecessors, he was the first son of a British monarch to receive a formal school education, attending Eton College where he found solace in athletics rather than academics.
His private life was marked by significant upheaval. During a 1928 trip to Africa, Henry became romantically involved with pilot Beryl Markham. The affair, which included heavy drinking and public parties at the Grosvenor Hotel, caused deep concern for Queen Mary. To curb the scandal and his drinking, King George V imposed a rigorous schedule of international tours. This pressure eventually led Henry to marry Lady Alice Montagu Douglas Scott in 1935, a union arranged largely under parental influence.
Despite his 'unknown' reputation, Henry held significant responsibilities. Following the abdication of his brother Edward VIII, he became the first adult in the line of succession, serving as a vital support to King George VI. His career was not merely ceremonial; he served as a liaison officer in France during the early years of WWII and later became the only prince to serve as the Governor-General of Australia between 1945 and 1947. Though he sought a command in the 10th Royal Hussars, his royal status often restricted his military ambitions, leaving him to balance the duties of a high-ranking officer with the inescapable expectations of the Crown.
