Spain's third tier of football is a high-stakes bridge to professional glory
In short: Sitting just below the professional giants of La Liga, the Primera Federación serves as the pinnacle of semi-professional football in Spain. Since its 2021 inception, this league has evolved into a rigorous 40-club competition, where geographical rivalries and intense playoff structures determine who earns a coveted promotion to the second division.
Established by the Royal Spanish Football Federation in 2020, the league—originally dubbed the Primera División RFEF—was rebranded as the Primera Federación on 30 June 2022. It replaced the older structure to refine the hierarchy of Spanish football, sitting firmly above the fourth-tier Segunda Federación and the fifth-tier Tercera Federación. This tier is designed to bridge the gap between amateur roots and the professional heights of the Primera and Segunda División.
The league operates with 40 clubs split into two groups of 20, organized by geographical proximity. The regular season spans 38 matchdays, where teams compete in a double round-robin format. The stakes are immense: the leaders of each group secure automatic promotion to the Segunda División, while teams finishing second through fifth enter a high-pressure, two-legged playoff system. The victors of these playoffs join the group winners in moving up, while the bottom five teams in each group face relegation.
The competition also features unique rules for reserve teams, which are permitted to participate only if their parent club competes in a higher division. To maintain the integrity of the league structure, reserve teams are strictly prohibited from playing in the same division as their senior counterparts; if a promotion or relegation would cause a collision, the reserve team is automatically demoted or denied advancement. Beyond promotion, the league champion earns a trophy and a direct spot in the second round of the Copa del Rey, adding a layer of prestige to the grueling regular-season campaign.
