In short: Led by Nataliya Vitrenko, the Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine emerged as a radical, neo-communist force that rejected Western integration in favor of a Soviet-style economic model. Once a parliamentary player, the party’s staunch pro-Russian stance and anti-Western rhetoric eventually led to its total prohibition by the Ukrainian Supreme Court.

Vitrenko and her followers viewed the parent party as revisionist, positioning themselves as the only true Marxist voice in the country. Their platform was defined by a nostalgic, radical left-wing populism that sought to reverse the post-Soviet transition to capitalism, which they characterized as social regression. The party advocated for the restoration of state ownership over basic industries, the preservation of collective farms, and the establishment of workers' democracy within enterprises.

The PSPU’s geopolitical vision was explicitly anti-Western, consistently campaigning against NATO, the IMF, and the European Union. Instead, the party championed a strategic partnership with Russia and Belarus, supporting Ukraine's entry into the Eurasian Economic Union. This ideological framework was bolstered by ties to Aleksandr Dugin and the Eurasian Youth Union, leading some observers to classify the party as National Bolshevik. Domestically, the party demanded that Russian be granted official status alongside Ukrainian and sought to annul state honors previously awarded to historical figures like Stepan Bandera and Roman Shukhevych.

At its peak in the late 1990s, the party held 16 seats in the national parliament between 1998 and 2002. However, its electoral influence waned significantly over the following decade, failing to clear the 4% threshold in subsequent legislative contests. Following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine suspended the party in March. While the PSPU actively contested its legal dissolution, the Supreme Court of Ukraine dismissed its final appeal on 27 September 2022, effectively banning the organization from the political landscape.
