In short: Founded in 1929, the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists emerged as an authoritarian, underground force in western Ukraine. Influenced by radical political theories that prioritized the nation over the individual, the group utilized sabotage and targeted assassinations to challenge Polish rule, eventually fracturing into competing factions during the Second World War.

The Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) was established in 1929, growing out of the clandestine Ukrainian Military Organization. Its structure was strictly authoritarian, relying on conspiratorial methods to pursue its goals. The movement was deeply influenced by nationalist ideologies that emphasized the primacy of the nation and the superiority of will over reason. During the interwar period, the OUN gained significant support among students and youth, particularly within the Galicia region, where it conducted acts of sabotage and assassinated Polish officials.

Internal tensions eventually led to a major schism in 1940. The organization split into two distinct factions: the OUN-M, led by Andry Melnyk, and the OUN-B, headed by Stepan Bandera. These groups held divergent views on strategy, ideology, and tactics. Before this split, the organization was led by Yevhen Konovalets, who directed operations from abroad until he was assassinated by a Soviet agent in 1938. Following his death, Melnyk assumed leadership of the organization from his base outside the country.

During the Second World War, the OUN occupied a complex position within the shifting political landscape of western Ukrainian territories, which were controlled by both Soviet and Nazi forces. While the Nazi authorities generally prohibited political activities, they made an exception for the OUN, allowing for a limited degree of cultural and linguistic revival under their oversight. This period of the organization's history remains a subject of intense study, as the OUN's radical methods and shifting alliances during the war significantly impacted the region's trajectory.
