In short: Rae Carruth was a first-round NFL draft pick with a bright future until he orchestrated a plot to kill his pregnant girlfriend, Cherica Adams. The resulting tragedy left his son with permanent brain damage and sent the former Carolina Panthers wide receiver to prison for nearly two decades.

In 1997, Rae Carruth was selected 27th overall by the Carolina Panthers, signing a lucrative four-year contract. His professional trajectory was cut short by injuries and, ultimately, his criminal actions. On November 16, 1999, Carruth stopped his car in front of Cherica Adams in Charlotte, North Carolina, allowing an associate, Van Brett Watkins Sr., to pull alongside and shoot her five times. Adams, who was eight months pregnant, managed to call emergency services before falling into a coma.

Doctors performed an emergency caesarean section to deliver the baby, Chancellor Lee Adams, who survived despite suffering cerebral palsy and permanent brain damage from oxygen deprivation. Cherica Adams died on December 14, 1999. Carruth, who had initially posted bail, fled the state but was apprehended in Tennessee while hiding in a car trunk containing cash and personal supplies. He was subsequently waived by the Panthers and suspended by the NFL.

During his trial, prosecutors argued that Carruth arranged the attack because Adams refused to terminate her pregnancy. While the defense claimed the shooting was a spontaneous act of rage following a failed drug deal, a jury convicted Carruth of conspiracy to murder, discharging a firearm into a vehicle, and causing the death of an unborn child. He was acquitted of first-degree murder, which spared him from the death penalty. Carruth served 18 years in prison, gaining his release in 2018.

The aftermath of the case remains significant. Watkins, who received a much longer sentence, died in prison in 2023. Chancellor Lee Adams, the victim's son, graduated from high school in 2021. Carruth, now living under a different name in the southwestern United States, has largely avoided public discussion of the events, though he did issue an apology to the victim's mother shortly before his release.
