From defender to golden boot winner: the versatile career of Rachel Daly
In short: Rachel Daly has redefined positional versatility in professional football. After years of shifting between defence, midfield, and attack, she cemented her legacy by equalling the record for most goals in a single Women's Super League season. Her journey spans from American college soccer to international glory with the England squad.
Born in 1991, Rachel Daly began her path in the youth ranks of Leeds United before moving to the United States. During her time at St. John's University, she set school records for both goals and points. Her professional career gained momentum with the Houston Dash in the NWSL, where she eventually served as captain and led the team to their first trophy, the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup, earning both the Golden Boot and MVP awards for the competition.
Daly's return to England with Aston Villa in 2022 marked a peak in her individual performance. In the 2022–23 season, she scored 22 goals, equalling the record for the most goals in a single WSL season. This prolific output earned her the league's Golden Boot and the PFA Women's Players' Player of the Year award. Her ability to adapt was further demonstrated under England manager Sarina Wiegman, who deployed Daly in various roles, including left-back during the victorious Euro 2022 campaign and as a centre-forward to fill the void left by Ellen White.
Throughout her international career, Daly earned 84 caps for England, contributing 16 goals across a variety of positions. Her impact on the sport was formally recognised in the 2025 Birthday Honours when she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire. Following her retirement from international football in April 2024, she has continued her club career at Aston Villa, where she remains under contract until June 2027. In September 2026, it was confirmed that she would be unavailable for selection due to her pregnancy.
