How a Fictionalised Television Drama Became India's Longest-Running Religious Series
In short: RadhaKrishn, a Hindi-language television drama, captivated audiences for over five years by reimagining the lives of Hindu deities Radha and Krishna. Spanning 1,145 episodes, the series blended mythological narratives with cosmic drama, eventually becoming the longest-running religious show in Indian television history before concluding its successful run in January 2023.
Premiering on 1 October 2018 on Star Bharat, RadhaKrishn offered a fictionalised exploration of the divine relationship between Radha and Krishna. Produced by Swastik Productions, the series was directed by Rahul Kumar Tewary and featured Sumedh Mudgalkar as Krishna and Mallika Singh as Radha. The show’s narrative arc was expansive, beginning with a curse from Krishna's devotee Sridama, which forced Radha and Krishna to be reborn on Earth as part of a cosmic plan to save the world from evil. Over its 1,145 episodes, the series navigated complex mythological events, including the Kurukshetra War, the destruction of the Yadava clan, and the establishment of the Tirumala temple.
The series was notable for its ambitious scope, covering multiple incarnations and divine roles. Sumedh Mudgalkar portrayed various forms of the deity, including Rama, Narasimha, and Srinivas, while Mallika Singh embodied diverse manifestations such as Sita, Bhumi, and Bhargavi. The plot frequently wove in traditional stories, such as the Mahabharata, the Tulabhara weighing ceremony, and the curse of Gandhari, which ultimately led to the tragic downfall of the Yadavas. The show even incorporated a prequel, Jai Kanhaiya Lal Ki, which aired between 2021 and 2022, further expanding its mythological universe.
Beyond its primary narrative, the series explored philosophical themes like the nature of devotion and the struggle against human weaknesses such as greed, anger, and pride. The show concluded on 21 January 2023, following a final maharaas that saw the reunion of Radha and Krishna in Goloka. By blending traditional lore with dramatic storytelling, RadhaKrishn set a benchmark for religious television in India, maintaining its status as the longest-running drama on Star Bharat to date.
