How Rachel Morrison shattered the cinematography glass ceiling at the Academy Awards
In short: Born in 1978, Rachel Morrison transformed the landscape of modern filmmaking. As the first woman ever nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography, she proved that technical mastery and visual storytelling know no gender. Her journey from student photography to directing major features reveals a career defined by relentless evolution.
Raised in a Jewish family in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Morrison’s path to the camera began early. After graduating from Concord Academy in 1996, she pursued a double major in film and photography at New York University. By the time she completed her Master of Fine Arts at the AFI Conservatory in 2006, she had firmly committed to cinematography. Her early professional life was marked by television work, including a 2005 Emmy-nominated documentary, Rikers High, which explored education within the Rikers Island prison complex.
Morrison’s rise through the film industry was rapid and prolific. Between 2011 and 2015, she became a fixture at the Sundance Film Festival, with seven of her films screening there in just six consecutive years. Her collaborations with directors like Ryan Coogler and Dee Rees brought her significant acclaim. That same year, she was inducted into the American Society of Cinematographers, further cementing her status as a trailblazer in a field historically dominated by men.
Beyond her technical prowess behind the lens, Morrison has increasingly moved into the director's chair. Following her television directing debut on American Crime in 2015, she transitioned to feature films with the 2024 sports drama The Fire Inside, a biopic of boxer Claressa Shields. Her versatility continues to grow, with credits ranging from Marvel’s Black Panther to directing episodes of The Mandalorian. Today, she balances her creative projects with teaching at the Maine Media College, ensuring that her influence extends to the next generation of filmmakers while she continues to helm new features like 2025's Love of Your Life.
