The shadow planet that swallows the sun and moon
In short: In Hindu astrology, Rahu is a king of meteors with no physical body. A celestial shadow that causes eclipses, this entity is the severed head of an asura, eternally pursuing the Sun and Moon in a cycle of cosmic revenge.
Rahu is one of the nine major celestial bodies, known as the navagraha, in Hindu texts. Astronomically, Rahu represents the north lunar node—the point where the Moon's orbit intersects the Sun's path on the celestial sphere. Because it lacks physical substance, ancient seers assigned it planetary status due to its profound astrological influence. It is often paired with Ketu, the south lunar node, which sits 180 degrees away from Rahu in both orbital cycles and birth charts.
The origins of Rahu are found in the Puranic texts during the churning of the ocean of milk to extract amrita, the elixir of immortality. An asura named Svarbhanu attempted to steal the elixir by disguising himself among the devas. When discovered by Surya and Chandra, the deity Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to decapitate him. This event rendered Svarbhanu immortal but split him into two: his head became Rahu, and his body became Ketu.
This separation created a celestial enmity. Rahu, seeking revenge for his decapitation, pursues Surya and Chandra, attempting to consume them. When he succeeds in swallowing them, an eclipse occurs—the grahana. This cycle is linked to the saros, a period of approximately 18 years, 11 days, and 8 hours, which can be used to predict these solar and lunar events. In astrology, Rahu's influence is often viewed as malefic, associated with themes of delusion, materialism, and deceit, though in favorable configurations, it can represent science and technology.
