Red Dead Online generated millions annually despite Rockstar shifting focus to other projects
In short: While often overshadowed by the massive success of Grand Theft Auto Online, Red Dead Online maintained a dedicated player base and consistent revenue for years. Internal data reveals the game generated millions in weekly earnings, proving that even a secondary title can command significant commercial weight in the gaming industry.
Red Dead Online, the multiplayer component of the 2018 title Red Dead Redemption 2, launched in 2019 after a beta period. Set in 1898, the game allows players to navigate a fictionalized United States, completing story missions, engaging in side activities, and interacting with other players in groups called posses. The experience was designed to be slower and more grounded than its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto Online, focusing on immersive elements like hunting, horseback riding, and managing a character's honor rating.
The game's evolution was marked by significant content updates, including the Frontier Pursuits update in September 2019, which introduced specialized roles like bounty hunter, trader, and collector. These additions were intended to provide players with personalized progression paths. Later, the Moonshiners update in December 2019 and the Blood Money update in 2021 further expanded the game's criminal underworld and narrative scope. Despite these additions, Rockstar Games began withdrawing development resources by 2022 to prioritize the development of Grand Theft Auto VI.
Financial data from June 2024 to March 2026 highlights the game's enduring performance, with an average weekly revenue of US$507,193, totaling approximately $26.4 million annually. During this period, the game sustained an average of 969,000 active weekly players. While these figures were substantial compared to many industry competitors, they were dwarfed by Grand Theft Auto Online, which generated roughly $9.5 million per week from about 9.9 million players. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of parent company Take-Two Interactive, has consistently defended the game's performance, rejecting claims that it represents a missed opportunity and emphasizing that its success is only diminished when viewed through the singular lens of its more lucrative sibling.
