In short: Renzo Gracie is a third-generation legend whose influence shaped the very evolution of mixed martial arts. From the chaotic, bare-knuckle roots of the sport to the high-stakes arenas of Japan and America, his technical mastery and coaching have shaped the careers of some of the greatest fighters in history.

Born on March 11, 1967, Renzo Gracie is a 7th degree coral belt Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner and a central figure in the sport's global explosion. As a member of the storied Gracie family, he is the grandson of co-founder Carlos Gracie and the son of Robson Gracie. His career spanned the most transformative eras of combat sports, from the early Brazilian vale tudo circuit to the prestigious Pride Fighting Championships in Japan.

Gracie's technical prowess is matched by his reputation as a premier coach. He has trained a roster of elite fighters, including Georges St-Pierre, Frankie Edgar, Chris Weidman, and Matt Serra. His influence extends beyond the cage; he has even coached Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates.

His competitive journey was often marked by intense rivalry and high drama. In 1997, a match against Eugenio Tadeu in the Pentagon Combat event descended into a massive brawl involving over 400 spectators, leading to a ten-year ban on MMA in Rio de Janeiro. He also participated in legendary bouts against Kazushi Sakuraba, whom he later called his 'hero' and described as providing one of life's biggest lessons after Sakuraba dislocated his arm during their match.

To celebrate his profound impact on martial arts, Renzo Gracie joined the ADCC Hall of Fame on 21 February 2022. His legacy remains a cornerstone of both Brazilian jiu-jitsu and modern mixed martial arts.
