Before My Chemical Romance, Ray Toro almost pursued a career in film editing
In short: Known for his dramatic shredding as the lead guitarist of My Chemical Romance, Ray Toro once viewed music as a secondary pursuit. After high school, he enrolled in university to study film editing, finding deep satisfaction in the technical process of cutting scenes together to build a compelling narrative.
Born in Kearny, New Jersey, in 1977, Toro was introduced to the guitar by his brother, who also exposed him to legendary acts like Led Zeppelin and Metallica. While he played in local bands like The Rodneys during his youth, his academic focus shifted toward cinema after his 1995 graduation. He attended William Paterson University, where he developed a fascination with the structural mechanics of storytelling, even creating a short film about a man driven to insanity by an uncrackable egg.
Toro's eventual path to global fame began in the late 1990s when he was introduced to Gerard Way. This collaboration led to the formation of My Chemical Romance, a band that would eventually release four studio albums. Despite his success, Toro maintained his interest in the technical side of production. He has frequently compared his own guitar style to that of Brian May, citing the Queen guitarist's ability to layer harmonies as a primary influence. His approach to the instrument is often described as dramatic and precise, reflecting his early interest in classical guitarists like Andrés Segovia.
Since the band's initial split, Toro has embraced a more solitary creative process. In 2013, he began recording his debut solo album, Remember the Laughter, entirely at home, handling the instrumentation, vocals, and mixing himself. This transition from a collaborative band member to a self-contained producer highlights the same meticulous attention to detail he once applied to film. Whether arranging instrumentation to emulate traditional Japanese music for the SINGItForJapan project or mixing tracks for other artists, Toro remains a musician who views the studio as a space for technical exploration and narrative construction.
