Before he was a UFC champion, Rich Franklin taught high school mathematics in Ohio.
In short: Known as Ace, Rich Franklin transitioned from a quiet life as a math teacher to becoming a dominant UFC Middleweight Champion. His career spanned continents and included historic main events, yet he remained defined by his technical precision and a unique path that eventually led him into executive sports management.
Born in 1974, Richard Jay Franklin II balanced academic rigor with a burgeoning interest in martial arts. After earning a master's degree in education from the University of Cincinnati, he taught mathematics at Oak Hills High School. His fighting style, initially self-taught through instructional tapes, eventually evolved under professional coaches like Matt Hume and Jorge Gurgel. This intellectual approach to combat helped him secure the UFC Middleweight Championship in 2005 by defeating Evan Tanner at UFC 53.
Franklin’s career was marked by significant milestones, including being the first fighter to headline UFC events in four different countries across four consecutive bouts. His resilience was often tested by injury; he famously fought through a broken left hand to retain his title against David Loiseau in 2006 and later secured a knockout victory over Chuck Liddell despite suffering a broken forearm during the opening round. These performances earned him multiple Fight of the Night and Knockout of the Night honors, cementing his status as a pioneer in the sport.
Beyond the cage, Franklin demonstrated a keen entrepreneurial spirit. He co-founded the athletic brand American Fighter in 2002 and later transitioned into executive leadership as a Vice President for ONE Championship in 2014. His influence extends to the next generation of fighters through his recruitment series, ONE Warrior Series. Inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2019, Franklin’s legacy is defined by a rare blend of academic discipline, athletic longevity, and a seamless transition from the classroom to the boardroom.
