From law school dropout to the surreal world of The Mighty Boosh
In short: Rich Fulcher traded a potential legal career for the unpredictable stage of improvised comedy. After cutting his teeth in Chicago, he became a defining force in British cult television, known for his unhinged characters and a collaborative spirit that spans from sketch comedy to major Hollywood feature films.
Born in Massachusetts in 1968, Rich Fulcher initially followed a traditional path, graduating from Dartmouth College with a government degree and completing law school. However, he pivoted toward performance, joining the Upright Citizens Brigade in Chicago and co-creating the improvised show Modern Problems in Science. This production eventually toured the United Kingdom in 1994, marking his early entry into the British comedy scene.
Fulcher's career reached a turning point in 1998 when he encountered Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding while working on the sketch program Unnatural Acts. This meeting led to the formation of The Mighty Boosh. As a core member of the troupe, Fulcher performed in stage shows like Arctic Boosh and Autoboosh, eventually bringing his signature role—the chaotic zoo manager Bob Fossil—to the BBC Three television series that aired between 2004 and 2007.
Beyond his work with the Boosh, Fulcher has maintained a prolific career as a writer and performer. He collaborated with Matt Berry on the 2006 sketch series Snuff Box and has lent his voice to animated hits including Rick and Morty and Futurama. His versatility extends to live-action roles, ranging from recurring appearances on Drunk History to his performance as Larry Chucklesworth in the 2023 film Wonka. Whether writing books like Tiny Acts of Rebellion or appearing in projects like Marriage Story, Fulcher remains a fixture of both American and British comedy landscapes.
