How a high school scoring legend rose to the WNBA
In short: From leading Detroit Edison to three consecutive state titles to becoming a top-four WNBA draft pick, Rickea Jackson’s trajectory has been defined by elite scoring. After a standout collegiate career at Mississippi State and Tennessee, she has transitioned from a standout rookie to a key figure in the new Unrivaled league.
Rickea Jackson's ascent began in Michigan, where she became the all-time leading scorer for Detroit Edison Public School Academy with 1,771 points. ESPN ranked her the fifth-best player in her class and a five-star recruit, noting her early dominance. Following an impressive freshman campaign at Mississippi State, where she averaged 5.1 rebounds and 15.1 points per game, she moved to Tennessee for her third year.
At Tennessee, Jackson's impact intensified. She set a single-game scoring record at the SEC tournament with 34 points on March 3, 2023. Although projected as a first-round pick, she utilized a fifth year of eligibility granted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, averaging 20.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Such collegiate achievements led to her being taken fourth overall by the Los Angeles Sparks during the 2024 WNBA draft.
Her professional career has been marked by both immediate impact and significant challenges. Jackson appeared in every 40 regular-season games during her rookie year and earned a spot on the 2024 WNBA All-Rookie Team. However, her tenure with the Sparks was cut short by a trade to the Chicago Sky in April 2026, followed by a season-ending left torn ACL suffered in May 2026. Beyond the WNBA, she has expanded her reach by joining the inaugural season of the Unrivaled 3-on-3 league, playing for Mist BC in 2025 before being drafted by Breeze BC for the 2026 season.
