In short: In 2000, Atlantic Records dropped the band Dreve, but they kept the frontman. This unexpected pivot led to the formation of Shinedown, a group that would eventually dominate the rock charts and sell over 10 million records worldwide.

The origins of Shinedown are rooted in a moment of professional instability. When Atlantic Records decided not to release an album by Brent Smith's previous band, Dreve, they nonetheless saw enough potential in Smith to offer him a solo development deal. This allowed Smith to refine his songwriting and eventually recruit the foundation of a new group in Jacksonville, Florida, around 2001.

The band's early years were marked by both rapid ascent and intense internal friction. While their debut, 'Leave a Whisper' (2003), achieved platinum status, the period leading up to their third album, 'The Sound of Madness', was nearly their end. Internal struggles, fueled by substance abuse issues involving Smith and guitarist Jasin Todd, led to significant infighting and the eventual dismissal of both original members.

Despite these fractures, the band achieved unprecedented commercial success on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts. They hold the record for the most number one singles on that chart with 24, and every one of their released singles has reached the top five. This dominance was recognized by Billboard, which ranked them as the greatest of all time on the Mainstream Rock Artists chart during the chart's 40th anniversary in 2021.

The band's evolution has been defined by a cycle of heavy touring and creative renewal. From the 'pure rock' sound of 'Us and Them' in 2005 to the more 'empowering' themes of 'Amaryllis' in 2012—inspired by Smith's sobriety—the group has navigated lineup changes and shifting musical directions to maintain their status as one of the most successful modern metal acts.
