In short: Released in 1993, River of Dreams was intended to be Billy Joel's swan song. Despite reaching number one, the artist felt the music industry had moved on, leaving his serious, introspective work behind. He eventually abandoned pop songwriting entirely, pivoting to classical compositions and live performances instead of studio records.

The creation of River of Dreams was a turbulent process. Initially, Billy Joel recorded seven tracks at his Shelter Island home in 1992, but he was unhappy with the results. Following advice from Don Henley, he brought in producer Danny Kortchmar to rework the material. This collaboration shifted the sound, with only one original track, 'Shades of Grey,' surviving the transition. The album's tone was notably somber, exploring themes of betrayal and trust, which many speculated were inspired by a bitter legal battle with his former manager and brother-in-law, Frank Weber, over alleged embezzlement.

Commercially, the album was a success, debuting with approximately 240,000 units sold in its first week and spending three consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard 200. However, Joel later expressed deep frustration that the album failed to produce hit singles beyond the title track. He felt that the industry's lack of support for his more substantial work rendered the exhausting process of writing and recording pop music pointless. This disillusionment solidified his decision to step away from the pop/rock genre permanently.

While Joel continued to perform live, his only subsequent studio album, 2001's Fantasies & Delusions, was a departure into classical piano compositions. The legacy of River of Dreams remains complex; its cover, painted by Christie Brinkley, was once celebrated as the best of the year by Rolling Stone in 1993, only to be ranked among the publication's worst album covers of all time in 2024. Ultimately, the record serves as the final chapter in Joel's long career as a pop songwriter, marking his exit from a recording industry he felt no longer understood his creative intent.
