How a North Carolina university transformed itself through aggressive marketing and high-end student amenities
In short: Once a small college facing bankruptcy, High Point University has reinvented itself as a premier institution. By prioritizing career preparation, life skills, and luxury facilities, the school has achieved national rankings for its campus experience, even as its rapid expansion and reliance on debt have sparked debate among industry observers.
Founded in 1924 as High Point College, the institution struggled through the Great Depression, eventually declaring bankruptcy in 1934. For decades, it remained a modest regional school. However, since Nido R. Qubein assumed the presidency in 2005, the university has undergone a radical metamorphosis. Under his leadership, the school expanded from three academic schools to fifteen, grew its enrollment significantly, and invested billions in campus infrastructure, including a new dental school and a forthcoming $100 million flagship library.
The university’s strategy centers on a distinct focus: career preparation and life skills. This approach is supported by a mandatory first-year seminar and has yielded strong reported outcomes, with 99.2% of 2024 graduates employed or pursuing further education within six months. This emphasis on student experience has earned the school top rankings from The Princeton Review, including first place in the 'Best-Run Colleges' category and high marks for its residence halls, which are required for all students until their senior year.
Yet, this growth has not been without controversy. In 2012, Businessweek questioned the university’s financial model, specifically the high levels of debt used to fund campus upgrades and the school's heavy spending on marketing. Critics have challenged whether the institution’s rising reputation is driven by academic achievement or by its high-end amenities and aggressive promotional strategies. Despite these questions, the university continues to attract substantial private donations, including recent multi-million dollar gifts for new facilities, and has seen its athletic programs reach new heights, including a historic NCAA tournament victory for the men's basketball team in 2026.
