How Roger Gracie retired from jiu-jitsu without ever suffering a single submission defeat
In short: Roger Gracie is widely considered the greatest Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor in history. Over two decades of elite competition, he secured 14 world championship titles and achieved a feat that remains unmatched: he retired from the sport without ever being submitted by an opponent, cementing his legacy as an untouchable technical master.
Born in 1981 to a family synonymous with the sport, Roger Gracie is the grandson of Carlos Gracie, the founder of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. His path to dominance began early, though his trajectory shifted in 2000 when an incident in Rio de Janeiro led his mother to send him to London. There, he trained under his father, Mauricio Gomes, a renowned coral belt, and his uncle, Carlos Gracie Jr., eventually earning his black belt in 2003.
Gracie’s competitive record is defined by an extraordinary ability to finish fights. Between 2004 and 2010, he won 10 IBJJF world championship titles, becoming the first athlete to win the open weight division three times at the black belt level. His performance at the 2005 ADCC Submission Fighting World Championship remains a high-water mark for the sport; he won both his weight class and the absolute division, submitting every single opponent he faced. This clinical efficiency earned him a reputation for being nearly impossible to defend against.
Beyond his grappling success, Gracie pursued a career in mixed martial arts, competing in major organizations including Strikeforce, the UFC, and ONE Championship, where he became the inaugural Light Heavyweight World Champion in 2016. Despite his MMA ventures, his jiu-jitsu legacy remained pristine. In his final grappling match in 2017, he defeated Marcus Buchecha—a fellow titan of the sport—via a lapel choke. With that victory, he walked away from competition, having never been submitted in 20 years, and was subsequently inducted into both the IBJJF and ADCC Halls of Fame.
