In short: Rong Zhu’s journey through mixed martial arts began with humble tasks at the Enbo Fight Club. After years of training as a sparring partner and assistant, the ethnic Tibetan fighter rose through the regional Chinese scene to secure a major tournament title on the global stage.

Born on March 7, 2000, Rong Zhu is an ethnic Tibetan mixed martial artist who transitioned to MMA after a period of training in Sanda starting at age 12. His early career was defined by grit; before competing, he served as an assistant and sparring partner for Su Mudaerji at the Enbo Fight Club, where his responsibilities included carrying water and towels.

Rong's professional ascent was rapid. He began competing professionally in 2016, shortly after his 16th birthday, and built a 17–3 record on the Chinese regional circuit. A significant portion of this success occurred within the WLF promotion, where he secured the Lightweight title and successfully defended it three times.

His tenure in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has been marked by both triumph and technical setbacks. Following his UFC 261 debut against Kazula Vargas on April 24, 2021, Rong struggled to manage his weight. He missed the lightweight limit in two consecutive fights: weighing 158 pounds in September 2021 and 160 pounds in February 2022. These infractions resulted in him fighting at catchweight and forfeiting portions of his purse to opponents.

However, Rong found redemption through the Road to UFC tournament. After defeating Hong Seong-chan and Kim Sang-wook, he secured the Road to UFC Season 2 Lightweight championship by defeating Shin Haraguchi via a third-round rear-naked choke on February 4, 2024. His career has continued through high-profile bouts, including a Fight of the Night award earned against Kody Steele at UFC 312 on February 9, 2025.
