From California gyms to the UFC: the rise of lightweight fighter Rafa García
In short: Born in California and raised in Mexicali, Rafa García has transformed from a 13-year-old student of self-defense into a professional mixed martial artist. His journey through the Combate Americas championship and into the UFC's lightweight division highlights a career defined by technical precision and resilience.
Rafa García's professional journey began in 2014, following a foundation in martial arts that started at age 13 when his father introduced him to gym training. After a brief stint wrestling for Imperial High School, García moved to Mexicali, Baja California, in 2013, a move that would shape his dual Mexican and American identity.
His ascent in the professional ranks was marked by a dominant run in Mexico, where he secured a 4–0 record. This success paved the way for his entry into Combate Americas via open tryouts. He eventually captured the Combate Americas Lightweight Championship on September 20, 2019, after defeating Erick Gonzalez at Combate 44. He successfully defended this title against Humberto Bandenay on February 21, 2020, before choosing to vacate the championship on June 13, 2020.
Since entering the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), García has competed in the Lightweight division, facing a variety of opponents. His UFC tenure includes notable victories, such as his win over Natan Levy on November 20, 2021, and a rear-naked choke victory against Jesse Ronson on April 16, 2022. More recently, he secured a technical knockout against Jared Gordon on September 13, 2025, and a unanimous decision win over Alexander Hernandez on April 25, 2026.
García's career has also been punctuated by high-stakes matchups and technicalities. To illustrate, when fighting Hayisaer Maheshate on December 17, 2022, Maheshate recorded a weight of 158.5 pounds, exceeding the lightweight cap by two and a half pounds. This resulted in a catchweight bout and a fine of 20% of Maheshate's purse, which was awarded to García.
