From Star Trek engineer to prolific director, the versatile career of Roxann Dawson
In short: Best known for portraying a dual-heritage engineer on Star Trek: Voyager, Roxann Dawson successfully transitioned from acting to a robust career behind the camera. Her journey spans Broadway stages, science fiction novels, and directing credits on major television dramas, ultimately leading to her work on feature films.
Born in Los Angeles in 1958, Roxann Dawson began her professional life on the stage, appearing in a Broadway production of A Chorus Line. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1980, she moved into television work. Her breakthrough role arrived in 1994 when she was cast as B'Elanna Torres, a character defined by her mixed human and Klingon ancestry, on the series Star Trek: Voyager. She remained a central figure on the show for its entire seven-season run.
During her time on Voyager, Dawson began exploring directing, helming her first episode in 1999. This shift in focus became her primary professional pursuit throughout the 2000s. She has since directed episodes for a wide array of notable series, including The Good Wife, The Mentalist, and Foundation. Her directorial portfolio also extends to feature film, as seen with her 2019 project, Breakthrough. This film was influenced by her personal conversion to Catholicism in 1994, a significant change for someone raised in an atheist environment.
Beyond her work in front of and behind the camera, Dawson has engaged in creative writing. She co-authored a science fiction trilogy with Daniel Graham, consisting of Entering Tenebrea, Tenebrea's Hope, and Tenebrea Rising. Her career also includes experience as a producer on shows like Scandal and Cold Case. Today, she remains a versatile figure in the entertainment industry, balancing her history as a performer with a sustained commitment to directing and storytelling.
