In short: In professional wrestling, the Royal Rumble winner typically earns a title shot at WrestleMania. However, the 2016 event broke tradition, forcing reigning champion Roman Reigns to defend his title as the first entrant in a high-stakes, 30-man battle royal.

The 2016 Royal Rumble, held on January 24 at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, was the 29th annual iteration of WWE's signature event. While the match traditionally serves as a pathway to a WrestleMania championship match, this edition featured a unique stipulation. Following a storyline conflict involving WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, the reigning WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Roman Reigns, was required to defend his title starting as the number one entrant. The decision to place Reigns at the start of the match followed a series of scripted conflicts with the McMahon family. This unusual stipulation was orchestrated by the company's chief executive officer.

This setup marked the first and only time a defending champion competed in the match to protect their title. It was also only the second time the world championship was the prize of the match, following the 1992 event where a vacant title was at stake. The match saw the return of Triple H, who entered at number 30 and ultimately won the match by eliminating Dean Ambrose, marking his second Royal Rumble victory and his ninth world championship win. Triple H secured his victory by eliminating the final competitor, Dean Ambrose. This win marked his third time entering the match as the final participant.

The event was notable for several other reasons, including the pay-per-view debut of AJ Styles, who entered at number three. The 2016 Rumble was also the final event of the era before WWE reintroduced brand extension in July, making it the last Royal Rumble to feature a single world championship. Six matches took place during the night, highlighted by a critically acclaimed Last Man Standing bout involving Kevin Owens and Dean Ambrose. The night featured a variety of matches, including a tag team contest between The Usos and The New Day. Additionally, Kalisto successfully captured the United States Championship during the event.
