From aspiring civil servant to reality television royalty: the ascent of Rubina Dilaik
In short: Rubina Dilaik was once on the path to becoming an Indian Administrative Service officer, but a chance audition in Chandigarh redirected her toward stardom. Today, she stands as one of India's highest-paid television actresses, celebrated for her fearless performances and a career defined by both dramatic range and reality show dominance.
Born in Shimla in 1987, Dilaik initially balanced academic ambitions with local beauty pageantry, winning the Miss Shimla title in 2006 and the Miss North India Pageant in 2008. Her transition to acting began with the show Chotti Bahu, where she gained widespread recognition. This early success paved the way for a diverse array of roles, including portrayals in Punar Vivah – Ek Nayi Umeed and the mythological series Devon Ke Dev...Mahadev.
A significant turning point in her career occurred between 2016 and 2020, when she portrayed Soumya Singh, a trans woman, in the long-running series Shakti – Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki. This role earned her critical acclaim, including the Best Actress award at the 2017 ITA Awards. Her commitment to the character extended beyond the screen; she has since become a vocal supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community, notably auctioning her Bigg Boss 14 wardrobe to raise funds for the cause during Pride Month in 2021.
Dilaik's influence expanded significantly through reality television. In 2020, she entered the fourteenth season of Bigg Boss, where she navigated personal challenges alongside her husband, Abhinav Shukla. Her victory in the show, followed by a successful Hindi film debut in the 2022 digital release Ardh, solidified her status as a versatile performer. Whether competing in Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 12 or winning the reality series Pati Patni Aur Panga in 2025, Dilaik continues to maintain a massive following, consistently ranking among the most desirable and popular figures in Indian media.
