Wrestling's high-stakes battle royal held inside a bio-secure bubble
In short: The 2021 Royal Rumble was defined by isolation. Held at the WWE ThunderDome in Florida, the 34th annual event replaced live crowds with a virtual audience and nearly 1,000 LED boards, navigating the complexities of a global pandemic while maintaining one of WWE's most storied traditions.
The event took place on January 31, 2021, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, WWE utilized the ThunderDome, a bio-secure bubble designed to host virtual fans who could be seen on LED boards within the arena. This was the sixth time the Royal Rumble was held in Florida, following previous iterations in 1990, 1991, 1995, 2006, and 2016. This particular iteration was the second held in the Tampa Bay region. The production moved to the ThunderDome after being hosted at Orlando's Amay Center.
The match itself is a modified 30-person battle royal where participants enter at timed intervals. For this specific event, winners were granted a choice of championship to challenge for at WrestleMania 37. Men could select between the Raw WWE Championship, the SmackDown Universal Championship, or the NXT Championship, while women could choose between the Raw, SmackDown, or NXT Women's Championships. This marked the final time NXT championships were eligible options before the brand reverted to a developmental role in September. This was the final time three different titles were available to the winners. The match format was originally conceived by Pat Patterson.
Edge triumphed in the men's bout, marking his second victory since 2010; he is the eighth person to win twice and the inaugural Hall of Famer to do so. Bianca Belair of SmackDown claimed the women's match by eliminating NXT's Rhea Ripley. Additional key results saw Drew McIntyre beat Goldberg to keep the WWE Championship, while Roman Reigns kept the Universal Championship by defeating Kevin Owens in a Last Man Standing match. The men's winner was the third wrestler to win after entering as the number one participant. In the opening bout, McIntyre successfully defended his title.
