The 40th Royal Rumble: A Milestone Event in Arizona
In short: WWE is preparing for its 40th annual Royal Rumble, a high-stakes battle royal where the winners earn a shot at a world championship. This milestone event breaks tradition by moving from January to February, setting the stage for the massive WrestleMania 43 showdown.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the 2027 Royal Rumble will occur on February 6, 2027, at Glendale, Arizona's State Farm Stadium. While the event is traditionally held in January, this marks only the second time it will occur in February, following the 2025 edition. This specific iteration, also promoted as Royal Rumble: Arizona, will feature competitors from WWE's Raw, SmackDown, and NXT brands.
The core of the event is the Royal Rumble match, a modified battle royal. Unlike a standard battle royal where all participants start in the ring, these matches feature 30 wrestlers who enter at timed intervals. The stakes are immense: the winners earn a world championship match at WrestleMania 43. For the men, this means a choice between Raw's World Heavyweight Championship or SmackDown's Undisputed WWE Championship. Female competitors must decide whether to pursue SmackDown's WWE Women's Championship or Raw's Women's World Championship.
Historically, the Royal Rumble has been a cornerstone of WWE's 'Big Four' pay-per-view events—alongside WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Survivor Series—though the elevation of Money in the Bank in 2021 has expanded that list to the 'Big Five.' Since its debut as a television special in 1988, the event has transitioned through various formats, becoming a pay-per-view in 1989 and adding livestreaming capabilities in 2015. The 2027 event will be broadcast via ESPN Unlimited in the US, Netflix internationally, and SuperSport in Sub-Saharan Africa.
