From Mayo to the pitch: the professional journey of forward Ruairí Keating
In short: Born in Dublin and raised in Westport, Irish forward Ruairí Keating has navigated a decade of professional football across Ireland and England. From early loans at Finn Harps to securing titles with Cork City, his career is defined by resilience, including a return to the pitch following a major Achilles injury.
Ruairí Thomas Keating, born 16 July 1995, began his professional path by signing with Sligo Rovers in 2014. His early development involved multiple loan spells at Finn Harps, where he gained essential first-team experience. By 2017, Keating moved to England to join Torquay United. His time there was marked by both challenge and success, including experiencing relegation in 2018 and subsequently helping the club secure the National League South title during the 2018–19 season.
Returning to Ireland, Keating became a pivotal figure for Cork City. In 2022, he finished as the club's top goalscorer, helping them win the League of Ireland First Division. His personal life faced a profound tragedy in July 2023 when his father, Ciaran, died in a car crash while traveling to watch him play. Keating demonstrated significant professional resolve shortly after, scoring a hat-trick against Sligo Rovers on 1 September 2023 and dedicating the performance to his father. His form that month earned him the League of Ireland Player of the Month award.
Keating's career has been punctuated by physical setbacks, including a head injury in 2024 and a ruptured Achilles tendon in April 2025, which sidelined him for several months. Despite these hurdles, he returned to action to help Cork City secure the 2026 League of Ireland First Division title. Beyond his club achievements, Keating maintains international eligibility for both the Republic of Ireland and the United States, the latter through his grandmother born in Queens, New York City. He is also the nephew of the singer Ronan Keating.
