Trai Hume’s professional trajectory began in earnest when he signed his first contract with the Irish Premiership club Linfield in January 2019. His debut arrived shortly after, on 23 April 2019, as a substitute in a 5–1 victory over Cliftonville. Following a season-long loan at his hometown club, Ballymena United, where he made 37 appearances and scored six goals, Hume returned to Linfield to become their primary right back, competing in UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A pivotal shift occurred on 4 January 2022, when Hume moved to EFL League One side Sunderland on a four-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee. After establishing himself as a regular starter during the 2022–23 season, he extended his stay at the club in June 2023, committing to Sunderland until 2027 with an additional one-year option. After Sunderland moved up to the Premier League, he committed to the club via a lengthy deal on 13 August 2025, lasting through summer 2030.
Representing Northern Ireland internationally, Hume has appeared for the under-17, under-19, and under-21 sides. He earned his first senior cap in March 2022 during a 1–0 friendly loss to Hungary. A standout moment in his international career came during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, when he scored against Slovakia to help secure a significant victory, effectively derailing Slovakia's hopes of qualification. His impact was further recognized when he was named the Northern Ireland Senior Men's Player of the Year in 2023.
