From Galway to the Premier League: The rise of Irish footballer Ryan Manning
In short: Born in County Galway, Ryan Manning has navigated a decade of professional football across Ireland and England. From his early days as a teenage standout in the League of Ireland to his current role at Southampton, Manning has evolved into a versatile left-back and midfielder on the international stage.
Ryan Phelim Manning, born on 14 June 1996, began his journey in Carnmore, County Galway. His early development took place at Cregmore Claregalway before he joined Mervue United. Manning made his senior debut at just 16 years old against Athlone Town. His breakout 2013 season saw him net nine goals in 29 appearances, helping Mervue reach the promotion play-offs. Following the O'Connor report, which consolidated Galway's football presence, he moved to Galway United for the 2014 season, where he secured promotion to the Premier Division by scoring in both legs of the final against University College Dublin.
In January 2015, Manning transitioned to English football, signing with Queens Park Rangers. After a period of adjustment and a loan spell at Rotherham United, he established himself under manager Ian Holloway, debuting in December 2016. His performance was immediately praised as outstanding, leading to a contract extension. Manning later joined Swansea City in October 2020, where he became a key figure before his 2023 move to Southampton. His career has been marked by tactical versatility, transitioning from an attacking threat in his youth to a reliable defender capable of contributing in the final third.
Manning's international career reflects his steady progression through the ranks. After being called up to the senior Republic of Ireland squad in November 2018, he earned his first cap in a UEFA Nations League match against Bulgaria in November 2020. Beyond his club and country duties, football remains a family pursuit; his brother, Ronan Manning, also plays professionally for Treaty United. Today, Manning continues to compete in the English league system, bringing his experience from the Championship and Premier League to the pitch, including notable contributions like his free-kick goals for Southampton in 2025.
