In short: Before she was a cosmic defender, Sailor Mars was inspired by the personal life of her creator. From the rituals of Shintoism to the frustrations of working at a shrine, the character's fiery temperament and spiritual abilities are rooted in Naoko Takeuchi's own college experiences.

The character of Rei Hino, known as Sailor Mars, is far more than a superhero. Her creator, Naoko Takeuchi, based Rei's identity on her own time working as a miko (shrine maiden) at the Shiba Daijingu Shrine. This real-world connection informs Rei's spiritual toolkit, including her ability to perform fire readings, sense danger, and use ofuda charms to dispel evil spirits. Even her dislike of being approached by shrine patrons is a direct reflection of Takeuchi's own collegiate frustrations.

While her powers are celestial, her methods are deeply traditional. In her civilian form, Rei practices Kuji-Goshin-Ho, a ritual involving specific hand signs and the chanting of nine sacred words—Rin, Pyō, Tō, Sha, Kai, Jin, Retsu, Zai, and Zen—to exorcise spirits. Her combat style also blends the supernatural with the physical; her skill in the school archery club eventually manifests as the Mars Arrow, a weapon used for her powerful 'Mars Flame Sniper' attack.

The character's personality has also undergone significant evolution. In the original manga, Rei is a disciplined, conservative, and somewhat aloof figure with a distaste for modern romance. However, the anime adaptation, influenced by director Kunihiko Ikuhara, transformed her into a more stubborn and even pop-culture-loving teenager who frequently engages in petty arguments with Usagi Tsukino. Despite these shifts, her core identity remains tied to the Hikawa Shrine, a fictionalized version of real Tokyo landmarks, where she maintains her connection to the spiritual realm.
