In short: The Sacramento State Hornets football program has evolved from its 1954 origins into a formidable force. After decades of conference transitions and building a legacy, the team achieved an undefeated regular season in 2022, setting school records and securing its place as a significant contender in the college football landscape.

The Sacramento State football program began in 1954 under coach Dave Strong, securing its first victory the following year. For much of its early history, the team competed in conferences like the Northern California Athletic Conference and the Western Football Conference. It was not until 2019 that the program reached a major milestone, earning its first-ever Big Sky Conference Championship and its inaugural appearance in the FCS playoffs, finishing the season ranked No. 3 nationally.

The 2022 season marked a pinnacle for the Hornets, who achieved an undefeated 11–0 regular season record and a total of 12 wins, both school records. During this campaign, the team reached as high as No. 2 in major FCS polls and secured its first FCS playoff victory against Richmond. This success was punctuated by a 27–21 win over rival UC Davis in the Causeway Classic, which drew a record crowd of 23,073 fans to Hornet Stadium.

The program has also gained a reputation for pulling off significant upsets against larger schools. In 2011, the Hornets defeated Oregon State in overtime, marking their first win over an AQ conference team. They followed this with a 2012 victory over Colorado, where a last-minute field goal by walk-on kicker Edgar Castenada secured a 30–28 win. These performances demonstrated the program's ability to compete at a high level despite being heavy underdogs.

Looking forward, the program is set for another major transition. Starting July 1, 2026, the Hornets will join the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) as a football-only member of the Mid-American Conference. This move represents the latest chapter in a long history of growth, from the team's early days at Hornet Stadium—which opened in 1969—to its current status as a rising program in the national college football scene.
