In short: In the Sailor Moon franchise, Sailor Saturn represents the ultimate paradox. As the tenth and final Guardian of the Moon Kingdom, she wields the power to annihilate entire solar systems or reset evolution itself. Yet, this force of destruction is inextricably linked to the concept of rebirth and restoration.

Sailor Saturn is the alter ego of Hotaru Tomoe, a character whose existence is defined by a complex relationship between her human identity and her cosmic duty. Unlike other Sailor Guardians, whose human identities remain separate from their reborn selves, Saturn's spirit resides deep within Hotaru. This connection has led to a fluctuating physical existence; Hotaru has been introduced as a twelve-year-old, reborn as an infant, and has even appeared as a young child between the ages of four and five.

The character's history is marked by profound trauma and metaphysical shifts. In the original anime, Hotaru's life was unnaturally prolonged after a freak storm in Tokyo's Sankakusu District left her on the verge of death. This survival was aided by her father, Souichi Tomoe, who turned her into a cyborg. In contrast, the manga depicts her being possessed by the parasitic Daimon Mistress 9 from the age of four, a presence that distorted her body into an adult-like form before she was eventually expelled.

The scale of Saturn's power is immense. Carrying the Silence Glaive, she can bring about the destruction of worlds with a single swing. This capacity for ruin makes her a figure of fear; the Outer Guardians initially intended to kill Hotaru to prevent her from awakening and destroying Earth. However, her role is ultimately restorative, as her destructive powers complement the restorative abilities of Sailor Moon, ensuring that the end of one era allows for the beginning of another, such as the new Silver Millennium.
