When an alien race arrives with their own form of Cursed Energy
In short: The world of Jujutsu Kaisen is expanding into the cosmos. Sixty-eight years after the Culling Games, a new threat emerges from the stars: the Simurians. This spin-off explores what happens when traditional sorcery meets extraterrestrial technology in a high-stakes diplomatic test.
Set in the year 2086, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo marks a significant evolution of Gege Akutami's universe. The narrative takes place nearly seven decades after the Culling Games, depicting a world where the 'Golden Age' of sorcery has faded into a landscape defined by the merging of advanced technology and Jujutsu. This shift moves the series away from purely terrestrial Cursed Spirits toward a cosmic conflict involving the Simurians—an alien race that possesses its own unique form of Cursed Energy.
The story centers on a diplomatic mission to Japan, the planet's Cursed Energy capital. A Simurian representative named Marulu Val Vol Yelvori, known as Maru, arrives in a spaceship seeking a new home for his people. To determine if humanity and the Simurians can coexist, Japanese authorities authorize Maru to partner with two specific Jujutsu Sorcerers: Tsurugi and Yuka Okkotsu. Notably, these sorcerers are the grandchildren of the main series' protagonists, Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zen'in, bridging the generational gap between the original work and this new era.
The creation of Modulo was a deliberate strategic move by Akutami to expand the franchise without compromising its core themes. Initially hesitant about spin-offs due to fears of creative misalignment, Akutami eventually embraced the idea as a way to explore background elements and parallel timelines with more leniency. This approach allowed for extensive planning during serialization meetings to ensure the new project felt like a natural extension of the established world rather than a departure from it.
The series saw a brief but impactful run in Weekly Shōnen Jump, serialized from September 8, 2025, to March 9, 2026. Despite its short duration—spanning only three tankōbon volumes—it achieved significant commercial success. The first and second volumes were among the top-selling manga of the first half of 2026, with the first volume debuting at number one on Oricon's weekly rankings with over 190,000 copies sold.
