A three-century-old Russian institution that once had a minor planet named after it.
In short: Established by Peter the Great in 1724, Saint Petersburg State University is a cornerstone of Russian scholarship. From its origins as part of the Academy of Sciences to its modern status as a global research hub, this institution has survived wars, political upheaval, and radical shifts in the Russian state.
Founded by a decree from Peter I on February 8, 1724, the university was originally envisioned as an academic gymnasium and university within the Russian Academy of Sciences. While Mikhail Lomonosov, an early rector, championed the development of a full-scale institution, it was not until 1819 that Alexander I reorganized the Main Pedagogical Institute into the independent St. Petersburg University. This transition solidified its autonomy, though the university has since navigated numerous name changes, including its tenure as Leningrad State University during the Soviet era.
The university’s history is deeply intertwined with the city’s own. Its main building, the Twelve Colleges, was designed by Domenico Trezzini and transferred to the university in 1838. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the institution became a focal point for intellectual and political discourse, notably during the 1861 student unrest. Despite the severe damage sustained during the Siege of Leningrad in World War II—which forced an evacuation to Saratov—the university was fully restored and continues to operate as a leading center for multidisciplinary research.
Today, the university maintains a massive academic footprint, offering hundreds of degree programs across seven primary fields. Its library holds over seven million items, including donations from Catherine the Great. The institution’s influence is global, counting nine Nobel Prize winners and two Fields Medalists among its alumni. As a pioneer in digital education, it serves as a founding participant in international massive open online course alliances, bridging its centuries-old legacy with the demands of 21st-century problem-solving.
