A mundane salaryman's life is transformed by a magical bird
In short: What begins as a simple attempt to cure boredom through pet ownership turns into a multidimensional odyssey. After adopting a small gray Java sparrow, a middle-aged salaryman discovers his new companion is actually a reincarnated Star Sage capable of transporting him between worlds.
Buncololi authored the Japanese light novel series Sasaki and Peeps, with illustrations by Kantoku. The plot revolves around a middle-aged office worker whose routine changes after adopting a tiny grey Java sparrow called Peeps. Unbeknownst to him at first, Peeps is the reincarnation of the great Star Sage, originally known as Piercarlo. The manga adaptation, illustrated by Pureji Osho, began its run in Shōnen Ace Plus in early 2021. As of mid-2024, the manga has been collected into four volumes.
The narrative weaves together two distinct settings. In the modern world, Sasaki becomes entangled with a psychic organization working to protect civilians from a rogue faction known as 'Irregulars.' Meanwhile, in a parallel world, he must navigate the complexities of magic and an escalating war that threatens a country he has grown fond of. As the story progresses, Sasaki's life becomes increasingly chaotic. He finds himself caught in the middle of intense events that disrupt his once simple existence.
The series has seen significant success across multiple media formats. Originally serialized as a web novel on platforms like Kakuyomu and Shōsetsuka ni Narō starting in December 2018, it was later published by Media Factory's MF Bunko J imprint in January 2021. The series gained significant acclaim, topping both the novel and tankōbon sections in the 2022 Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! list. The franchise has expanded through various media, including a manga and an anime. English-speaking audiences can access the light novel and manga via Yen Press.
Silver Link produced an anime version that broadcast between January and March 2024. Following the initial success, a second season was announced at AnimeJapan 2024 and premiered on October 7, 2026. The animated adaptation features voice acting by Tomokazu Sugita and Tyson Rinehart. It was directed by Mirai Minato and features music by Madkid.
