In short: Before he was the first overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft, Sam Bradford was a high school athlete who excelled in basketball, golf, and hockey. His transition to professional football brought record-breaking rookie performances and a massive contract, yet his career was defined by persistent injuries and team transitions.

Born in 1987, Sam Bradford was a standout athlete in Oklahoma City. Beyond football, he was a skilled basketball player and a golfer who defeated future PGA professionals. His hockey coach, former Stanley Cup champion Mike McEwen, even believed Bradford possessed the talent to reach the NHL. Despite this versatility, Bradford focused on football, eventually earning a scholarship to the University of Oklahoma.

At Oklahoma, Bradford quickly ascended to stardom. In 2008, he became only the second sophomore to claim the Heisman Trophy, leading the most prolific offense in NCAA history. He entered the NFL as the top pick for the St. Louis Rams in 2010. His debut season was historic; he set the record for rookie completions and earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. His initial contract, valued at up to $86 million, set a new benchmark for rookie compensation.

Despite his early promise, Bradford's professional tenure was frequently interrupted by physical setbacks. He suffered multiple ACL tears and shoulder injuries that sidelined him for significant stretches. Throughout his nine-season career, he played for the Rams, Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings, and Arizona Cardinals. His 2016 season with the Vikings was statistically notable, as he set a then-record for single-season completion percentage at 71.6%, surpassing the mark previously held by Drew Brees.

Bradford's journey reflects the volatility of professional sports, where immense talent and high draft status often collide with the physical toll of the game. While he never secured a long-term franchise anchor role, his ability to adapt to new systems—often on short notice—remains a defining characteristic of his time in the league.
