In short: Sam Simon was a television powerhouse who co-created The Simpsons and defined its emotional, character-driven humor. Yet, after walking away from the industry that made him wealthy, he dedicated his final years to radical philanthropy, self-funding massive animal rescue operations and food programs for the needy before his death in 2015.

Born in 1955, Sam Simon was a child prodigy in art who eventually became a central figure in television history. After working on shows like Taxi and Cheers, he co-developed The Simpsons in 1989. While Matt Groening conceived the characters, colleagues credit Simon as the show's true creative force, responsible for its emotional depth and the specific, three-dimensional tone that made it a cultural phenomenon. He assembled the initial writing team and insisted on a collaborative process, famously pushing for actors to record lines together to capture a radio-like chemistry.

Despite his success, Simon often felt the industry turned him into a 'monster.' He left The Simpsons in 1993, negotiating a lucrative deal that provided him with millions annually. This financial independence allowed him to pursue diverse interests, including professional poker and boxing management—he notably guided Lamon Brewster to the WBO Heavyweight Championship in 2004. However, his most significant pivot was toward activism. A vegan and staunch animal rights advocate, he founded the Sam Simon Foundation, which operated a high-end, six-acre rescue facility in Malibu and provided free veterinary care to low-income families.

In 2012, Simon was diagnosed with terminal colorectal cancer and given only months to live. Rather than hoarding his wealth, he bequeathed his $100 million estate to the charities he supported. He expanded his efforts to include 'Feeding Families,' a mobile program delivering vegan meals to hundreds of households weekly. Though his life was marked by professional brilliance and personal intensity, his final years were defined by a deliberate effort to give away his fortune, finding more pleasure in philanthropy than in the industry that had made him rich.
