In short: Long before he became a household name, Matt Groening was a struggling artist in Los Angeles, working odd jobs and self-publishing a cynical comic strip called Life in Hell. This underground success eventually caught the eye of Hollywood producers, leading to the creation of the most iconic family in television history.

Born in Portland, Oregon, in 1954, Matt Groening moved to Los Angeles in 1977 with aspirations of becoming a writer. His early years in the city were defined by a series of unglamorous roles, including washing dishes at a nursing home and working at a record store. During this period, he began self-publishing Life in Hell, a comic strip that channeled his frustrations into a dark, satirical look at urban life. By the mid-1980s, the strip had gained a significant following, appearing in hundreds of newspapers and establishing a foundation of loyal fans.

The transition to television occurred when producer James L. Brooks sought to adapt Groening's work for The Tracey Ullman Show. Fearing he would lose ownership of his characters, Groening improvised a new concept in the lobby of Brooks's office: the Simpson family. He named the characters after his own relatives, including his parents, Homer and Marge, and his sisters, Lisa and Maggie. The resulting shorts were an immediate success, eventually evolving into the longest-running primetime animated series in American history.

Groening's creative output expanded beyond Springfield with the launch of Futurama in 1999, a science-fiction series developed with David X. Cohen. Despite facing multiple cancellations and network shifts, the show maintained a dedicated audience, eventually finding a new home on streaming platforms. In 2018, he returned to animation with the fantasy series Disenchantment for Netflix. Throughout his career, Groening has balanced his mainstream success with a commitment to his personal artistic voice, winning numerous accolades including 14 Primetime Emmy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Beyond his animation work, Groening has maintained a diverse range of interests, from curating music festivals to playing in a band composed of authors. His influence on modern comedy is profound, yet he remains grounded in the same observational humor that defined his early underground comics. Whether through the dysfunctional dynamics of the Simpsons or the futuristic satire of Futurama, Groening has consistently used his platform to challenge mainstream conventions.
