In short: Formed in 1965, Savoy Brown became a staple of the American blues rock circuit through relentless touring. While the group saw dozens of musicians cycle through its ranks, founder Kim Simmonds remained the sole constant member for 57 years, steering the band until his death in 2022.

Savoy Brown began in London as a blues-focused ensemble, named for the elegant American label Savoy Records and the plain word Brown. Despite their British roots, the band found their greatest success in the United States, where they spent years touring to build a loyal following. It often took several albums before their records gained traction, but the band persisted, eventually breaking into the Billboard Hot 100 during the late 1960s and 1970s.

The band’s history is defined by a revolving door of talent. Early members included Brice Portius, one of the first black blues musicians in a British rock band, and future Yes drummer Bill Bruford, who stayed for only a fortnight. This volatility was a constant; by 1970, founding members had departed, and the group frequently rebuilt itself around Simmonds. Notable alumni include Paul Raymond, who later joined UFO, and Dave Walker, who briefly fronted Fleetwood Mac and Black Sabbath.

Simmonds’ leadership was marked by both resilience and personal upheaval. In the 1970s, he severed ties with his brother and manager, Harry Simmonds, following legal troubles. Despite the instability, the band achieved a late-career peak in 1981 with the album Rock 'N' Roll Warriors and the single 'Run to Me,' which reached number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100. Even as the industry changed, Simmonds kept the band active, releasing albums well into the 2010s.

The legacy of Savoy Brown is one of endurance rather than singular hits. While superstardom remained elusive, the band’s influence persisted through their extensive catalog and the careers of the many musicians who passed through their ranks. When Simmonds died on 13 December 2022, the band officially disbanded, marking the end of a project that had functioned as a training ground and a constant presence in the blues rock world for over half a century.
