The gamma-irradiated physicist who became a Canadian superhero

In short: Walter Langkowski thought a controlled gamma-radiation experiment would simply replicate the Hulk's transformation. Instead, the physicist's attempt to study radiation near the Arctic Circle opened a mystical doorway, linking his biology to a prehistoric beast and forever altering the landscape of Marvel's Canadian superhero teams.

Created by John Byrne and Chris Claremont, Sasquatch first appeared in The Uncanny X-Men #120 in April 1979. Dr. Walter Langkowski was a highly accomplished physicist and professor at McGill University, with a past as a professional football player for the Green Bay Packers. His transformation into a massive, orange-furred beast was intended to be a scientific endeavor, but the experiment inadvertently bridged the gap between Earth and the "Realm of the Great Beasts."

This mystical intersection allowed a creature named Tanaraq to switch places with Langkowski, granting him superhuman strength, endurance, and enhanced physical attributes. While he initially suspected cosmic rays from the Aurora Borealis caused his orange fur instead of the typical green skin seen in other gamma mutates, the truth was far more supernatural. His transformation is triggered by willpower or meditation, yet unlike many such characters, Langkowski maintains his full intelligence and personality while in beast form.

The character's history is marked by extreme physical feats and metaphysical struggles. As Sasquatch, he has demonstrated the strength to hurl a DC-10 cargo plane over 1,000 feet backward and even pull a naval destroyer ashore. His journey has included serving as a founding member of the superhero team Alpha Flight, battling the Hulk, and even experiencing death—losing his spirit to the interdimensional void before eventually returning to life through complex, mystical means.

Langkowski's existence highlights the intersection of science and sorcery within the Marvel Universe. From his time as a member of Alpha Flight to his later involvement in the space program, his life has been defined by the struggle to balance his scientific mind with the primal power of the beast within.
