The elite unit that uses disguises and black Mercedes to strike behind enemy lines
In short: From hijacking planes in maintenance uniforms to driving a replica of a dictator's car, Sayeret Matkal specializes in the unexpected. This Israeli commando unit was designed not just for combat, but for deep intelligence gathering through high-stakes deception and precision strikes.
Founded in 1957 by Avraham Arnan, Sayeret Matkal was born from a specific strategic need. Following the 1954 disbanding of Unit 101, the IDF lacked a dedicated special forces unit capable of deep reconnaissance. Arnan, a former Palmach fighter, petitioned the General Staff to create a force capable of conducting top-secret intelligence missions in enemy territory. The vision was to hand-pick the most physically and intellectually capable soldiers, training them even with Bedouin trackers to understand their adversaries.
The unit's history is defined by spectacular, high-risk operations. In 1972, commandos disguised as maintenance staff reclaimed a Sabena airliner at Tel Aviv Airport during Operation Isotope. In 1976, the unit participated in the Entebbe raid, using a black Mercedes designed to be a perfect copy of Ugandan leader Idi Amin’s personal car to deceive local troops. These missions often involve high-profile figures; for instance, the unit's leadership has included future Prime Ministers such as Ehud Barak and Benjamin Netanyahu.
However, the unit's legacy is not without tragedy and controversy. A 1974 mission at an Israeli school in Maʿalot ended in the deaths of at least 20 people, including many children, when DFLP militants opened fire. Beyond combat, the unit has faced internal friction; in 2003, 13 members presented a resignation letter to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, protesting the 'oppressive reign' in the territories. Despite this, the unit remains a cornerstone of Israeli special operations, conducting everything from assassinations to reconnaissance missions in Syria.
