In short: Montgomery Scott, the legendary "miracle worker" of the Enterprise, nearly vanished before the first episode aired. Despite his iconic status as the ship's paternal engineer, his inclusion was only secured by a persistent agent after the show's creator initially decided the role was unnecessary.

In 1966, director James Goldstone recommended James Doohan for the role of the Enterprise engineer during the production of the second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before." However, series creator Gene Roddenberry was initially skeptical, sending Doohan a letter stating that the show did not require an engineer. The character only survived the cutting room floor because Doohan's agent intervened to keep him in the lineup. Doohan was responsible for defining the character's cultural identity.

He chose a Scottish accent because he believed Scottish people made the best engineers, and he selected the first name "Montgomery" from his own middle name to honor his grandfather. While the character is often associated with Aberdeen—where he spent his youth and is described as a "pub crawler"—the town of Linlithgow actually claims to be his birthplace.

He even wears Clan Scott's tartan as part of his official uniform. Scotty’s legacy is defined by his unique relationship with the ship. He is portrayed as a paternal figure who views the Enterprise as his own, often acting as the bridge between Captain Kirk's ambitious goals and the reality of what the technology can achieve. His career spanned 52 years across 11 starships, eventually leading to a 147-year-old retirement after he spent 75 years "stored" in a transporter buffer. His technical expertise remains the ultimate safety net for the franchise, allowing him to devise last-minute solutions to dire problems.
