From Brooklyn roots to global mall staple: the turbulent saga of Sbarro
In short: Once a premier fixture of the American mall food court, Sbarro has navigated a dizzying journey of bankruptcy, rebranding, and international expansion. From the heights of the World Trade Center to the complexities of modern global politics, this pizza giant's history is far from simple.
Founded in 1956 by Gennaries and Carmela Sbarro, the company began as a family endeavor after the Sbarros immigrated to the United States from Naples, Italy. While the brand eventually became a global presence with over 600 locations across 28 countries, its identity is deeply tied to its New York origins. This connection was even reflected in a 2015 logo redesign, which replaced an Italian flag motif with a pizza slice outline and the text 'NYC.1956'.
The chain's history is marked by both tragedy and financial instability. Two of its busiest outlets—one at the World Trade Center's observation deck and another in the complex's mall—were lost during the September 11 attacks in 2001. Financially, the company has struggled with repeated Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings, notably in April 2011 and again in March 2014. These periods of restructuring often led to significant changes, such as the closure of 182 locations during the 2014 reorganization.
Sbarro's footprint has shifted significantly over the decades. While it once held a dominant position in the American mall landscape, the decline of food courts and shifting dietary habits contributed to a sharp reduction in U.S. locations by 2016. Despite these domestic challenges, the brand has pursued aggressive international growth, establishing a strong presence in the Philippines with 56 stores as of 2023 and expanding into the United Kingdom through partnerships with the EG Group.
