Calgary is building a massive new landmark designed to unite the community through nature
In short: Scheduled to open in 2027, Scotia Place is more than just a sports arena. This 10-acre development in Calgary’s Culture and Entertainment District aims to serve as a central gathering point, blending modern architecture with Indigenous cultural perspectives to create a space that reflects the city’s natural environment.
The design of Scotia Place draws inspiration from the ancestral lands of the Treaty 7 Peoples and the Métis Nation. By working alongside an Indigenous Advisory Group, the project team—comprising HOK-DIALOG, CAA ICON, and CANA/Mortenson—integrated elements representing the natural world. A standout feature is a central structure featuring a textured flame motif, intended to evoke a home fire that glows at night. This design choice serves as a symbolic hearth, meant to encourage storytelling and connection among visitors and residents alike.
Beyond its visual impact, the facility is a cornerstone of a broader urban revitalization effort. The site includes a community rink, multiple indoor and outdoor plazas, and four restaurants, all designed to support the 8,000 people expected to live in the surrounding downtown neighbourhood. Mayor Jyoti Gondek and Premier Danielle Smith have both emphasized that the project signals Calgary’s commitment to hospitality and economic growth, aiming to attract global events while providing long-term benefits to local businesses.
The project represents the culmination of years of planning and collaboration between the City of Calgary, the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC), and the Province of Alberta. Following a development permit application submitted in July 2024, the facility is positioned to become a premier destination for sports and entertainment. By prioritizing community-focused infrastructure, the city hopes to create a landmark that fosters belonging and serves as a vibrant heartbeat for the region for generations to come.
